The geek stuff has
been a bit neglected lately hasn't it? With all the football and political
shenanigans it has kind of ended up on the back burner. But don't worry,
because I plan to change that. With the Infinity War trailer and all the
speculation that a certain webbed wonder may or may not crop up in Sony's Venom
movie I felt that maybe we should have a look at some of Spider-Man's most
iconic villains. Ladies and Gentlemen, geekkind everywhere, Glitch'd
Perspektive proudly presents to you The Top Ten Spider-Man Villains of All Time.
10) Rhino (Aleskei Sytsevich)
Aleskei Sytsevich is a thug for a scientist from the Eastern Bloc, who is given artificial
skin that grants him superhuman durability and strength which has enabled him to have previously gone toe to toe with the Hulk. Arguably the strongest regular villain in Spidey's rouges gallery, he has had some great moments such as becoming a genius and deducing Spider-Man's true identity, defeating him on TV only to be captured by the Avengers, leaving a life of crime to settle down only to be dragged back in after the death of his wife, and killing Silver Sable during The Ends of the Earth story arc. While more than a match for Peter physically, his dim-witted nature often means he is outsmarted leading to his defeat.
9) Electro (Max Dillon)
A former
electrical engineer and a founding member of the sinister six, as well as the
Frightful
Four. After getting his powers in an accident while repairing a power
line Max Dillon became a living electrical generate. In his early days his powers
were already strong enough for Magneto to try and recruit him to The
Brotherhood of Mutants. While powerful he has arguably not always lived up to
his potential, but has often caused trouble for Spidey, whether being hired by
JJJ to fight him, becoming a living lightening bolt, or causing a mass breakout
at The Raft that leads to the formation of the New Avengers.
8) Mysterio (Quentin Beck)
A
former stuntman and special effects guy, plus yet another founding member of
the sinister six, Quentin Beck relies on illusion to combat old Webhead. In his
very first appearance he is able to neutralize Parker's Spidey Sense and use
corrosive fluid to destroy his webbing. Whether he is convincing Spidey he has
shrunk him, impersonating the webslinger and framing him for robbery, trying to
hypnotise him in to unmasking, making Peter believe he is responsible for the
death of a bystander or terrorising Aunt May into revealing where a hidden
fortune is Mysterio has proved he can be more than a handful for Spider-Man.
7) Vulture (Adrian
Toomes)
Another former electrical engineer and founding member of the
Sinister Six (there's a pattern forming here).
One
of the architects of the unnecessarily long and overly convoluted Clone Saga,
The Jackal, real name Miles Warren, is maybe not as iconic Spidey villain as
some who have missed out on the list but has made Peter's life more than difficult.
Responsible for the creation of Peter's "brothers" Kaine and Ben
Reilly. The list of crimes include cloning our favourite arachnid and Gwen
Stacy then forcing the two Spider-Men to fight to their death, and infecting
New York with spider powers through genetically modified bed bugs which lead to
eventual Man-Spider mutations. Warren is nothing if not consistently a pain in
the neck for the wall crawler.
5) Carnage (Cletus Cassidy)
Built
around the simple premise of "what if the Joker had super powers" the
psychotic combination of serial killer Cletus Cassidy and the spawn of Venom is
one of the webbed wonders biggest threats. Generally relying on an alliance
between Spidey and Venom to stop him, the scarlet killing machine has been
responsible for a mass killing spree and turning New Yorkers crazy in Maximum
Carnage, possessing the Silver Surfer and Ben Reilly, as well as taking over
and possessing an entire town in Carnage USA. Carnage is a true Avengers Level villain who even almost got a chance to literally
sink his teeth into Foggy Nelson at the raft if not for the timely and brutal
interference of Sentry.
4) Kraven The Hunter
Oh boy, what can you say about Kraven? Originally a Russian aristocrat who
fled during the Russian Revolution and ended up finding his own code of honour
in the jungle. Obsessed with proving himself after besting the most dangerous
prey in the world he decided to turn his sights on Spider-Man. He is a founding
member of the Sinister Six, but his best story is Kraven's Last Hunt which
see's him "kill" the wall crawler, and attempt to replace him and
prove himself his superior by beating and capturing Vermin, a foe Spidey had
previously failed to beat with out the
aid of others. Then to rub salt into the wound he then showed Spidey, who in
fact been put in to a death like state by Kraven what he had done and forcing a
recently revived Peter to fight Vermin before setting him loose on New York and
taking his own life.
3) Venom (Eddie Brock)
iconic villains of all time. Originally an alien costume
discovered on Battle World during the Secret Wars, upon returning to earth old
Webhead thinks there might be more to the suit than meets the eye and has it
confirmed by Mr Fantastic that it is in fact a living symbiotic being which
will eventually bond with Peter permanent if they are not separated. After
being forced away from Spidey the spurned suit ends up bonding with the equally
vengeful Eddie Brock and exploits their now shared knowledge of Spider-Mans
identity to terrorize him and MJ. Although he has yo-yoed between hero and
villain he has always worked best as a Anti-Heroic mirror of the webslinger.
2) Green Goblin (Norman & Harry Osborne)
1) Doc Ock (Otto Octavius)
To be
honest there is an argument the top three here can be placed in any order, but
Otto Octavious is number one for one reason, he "kills" Peter,
possess his body, while trapping Parker in Ock's own dying body, and
impersonates the wallcrawler, eventually being overwhelmed by Peter's memories
and attempting to be a hero as The Superior Spider-Man (Which is well worth
checking out). Making his return as the Superior Octopus during Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy. Not only
is he a dangerous combatant thanks to his bionic arms, but his genius and
expertise in radiation have lead even Mr Fantastic to seek his help when Sue
was experiencing difficulties with her pregnancy. When you combine this with
him being the creator of the Sinister Six, trying to burn away the O-Zone
Layer, abducting the child of Lily Hollister and Harry Osborne, and his
responsibility for the death of Captain George Stacy, well it's hard to argue
he isn't number one!
